Myriad Global was tasked with creating a blended training solution for Thames Water and Lanes Group plc, with the expressed goal of improving employee recruitment, career retention, and to improve the outcomes of workplace training.

Project

Developed during my time at Myriad Global Media, this award-winning virtual reality application was created for Thames Water, the UK's largest water and wastewater company. The project's goal was to simulate complex, high-risk utilities procedures, allowing employees to build crucial muscle memory and cognitive recall in a completely safe, controlled environment.

Rather than relying on traditional VR headsets, we engineered the experience for a bespoke, highly immersive Igloo where every inch of the wall is covered in screens, whilst using the HTC Vive controllers for navigating and interacting with the environment and UI. This unique hardware setup allowed us to create a shared, collaborative training space. By placing the learners inside a 1:1 scale simulation of their actual working conditions, the application drastically improves procedural accuracy and safety compliance without exposing trainees to real-world hazards.

My Role

  • VR Scenario & Interaction Design: I was responsible for translating complex, real-world utility procedures and safety compliance rules into engaging, interactive digital scenarios. Ensuring the simulation accurately reflected the physical working conditions of Thames Water engineers.

  • UX/UI for Non-Traditional VR Hardware: Because the application was projected onto a 360-degree physical dome rather than a standard VR headset, traditional UI paradigms did not apply. I designed the spatial layout, visual cues, and user interface specifically for a room-scale projection, focusing heavily on readability and user orientation, even with multiple users in the Igloo.
