Step into a simulated industrial environment where every decision matters. This immersive Health and Safety (HSE) VR training simulation plunges users into realistic hazard scenarios, allowing them to assess risks and execute critical compliance protocols under pressure, without any of the real-world danger. 

Project

During my time at Myriad Global Media, I requested the opportunity to design the company's inaugural VR application. Intended as a high-profile marketing tool, the simulation was built to showcase the vast capabilities of virtual reality as a training platform across multiple HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) use cases.

Because this was the studio's first venture into VR, there were no existing development frameworks in place. I took the initiative to research, establish, and standardise our internal design pipelines from scratch, authoring the Game Design Document (GDD) structures and best practices that guided the entire team throughout production.

The application was specifically designed for demoing at SHExpo (Safety & Health Expo) as our primary showcase to attract new enterprise clients. The launch was a massive success, successfully kickstarting Myriad Global Media's VR division and directly leading to the formation of a dedicated sister company, SHIIFT Training, which continues to produce VR training modules to this day.

My Role

  • Pipeline Creation & Technical Documentation: As this was the studio’s first venture into virtual reality, I researched and established our internal VR design pipelines. I authored the comprehensive Game Design Document (GDD) structures and established the best practices that guided the cross-discipline team throughout production.

  • VR Scenario & Interaction Design: I translated complex Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) compliance rules into three engaging, interactive digital scenarios. Across all modules, attendees were dynamically scored based on their strict adherence to real-world HSE protocols:

    • Fire Extinguisher Training: Users faced multiple fire types and had to select the correct extinguisher class and apply proper aiming techniques.

    • PPE Compliance: Users were tasked with dressing mannequins in the correct Personal Protective Equipment based on dynamically assigned job roles.

    • Hazard Perception: Users packed away tools while maintaining situational awareness, requiring them to actively identify and react to sudden environmental hazards.

  • Convention UX & Onboarding: Because the primary goal was to showcase this application on the bustling floor of SHExpo, I designed for rapid onboarding to maximise attendee throughput. I focused the UX and interaction design on making the controls immediately intuitive for enterprise clients who had never used a VR headset. Additionally, the simulation was mapped entirely to our physical booth dimensions; all interactions occurred within a 1:1 room-scale play space, eliminating the need for artificial in-game locomotion and keeping the experience comfortable.
